Visiting Robin Metz

I’ve recently returned from visiting Robin Metz who has been my wise man since I met him nearly 50 years ago and because he was that immediately for me, a man of many wisdoms, I have often overlooked that Robin also happens to be the coolest dude ever; since it’s easier to illustrate the latter, get this: Robin Metz played football while earning his undergraduate degree at Princeton then returned home to work in the Pittsburgh steel mills for the summer before he headed to Iowa to earn his MFA at the Iowa Writer’s Workshop then came to teach at Knox College at age 25 in 1967 where he led the creation of one of the most respected undergrad Creative...

Chapter 1 of Worlds Between

Especially for those of you who read the first book, 'The 53rd Parallel.' I hope you enjoy it. Chapter 1: A child is born This Man stood on the alert outside the door of the large wigwam, his flintlock primed and at the ready; he had tied a sprig of cedar together with a hawk feather near the muzzle of the barrel of his gun. In anticipation I was always excited, am always excited, but never nervous. I was just invited to be a guest on 'The State of Things', on WUNC, on Thursday the 5th, to talk about The...

Anung and Brita Wolf

The ancient Ojibway legend about Anung was told to me by Steve Fobister. He asked me to popularize it, and this summer Light Messages will be publishing a novella about Anung's Great Adventures that I wrote hoping to fulfill Steve's request. It is a magical story, one that would certainly benefit from illustrations, and Elizabeth Turnbull, the book's editor, hired Brita Wolf, my daughter, for the task. Brita is a very talented artisan and designer and for the past few years has been amazing us with her paper cuttings. She has prepared ten of them for Anung, each one so wonderfully graceful and pure, and I thought you'd appreciate the sort of magic her images will bring to the story.  Creative...
