Chapter 1 of Worlds Between

Especially for those of you who read the first book, 'The 53rd Parallel.' I hope you enjoy it. Chapter 1: A child is born This Man stood on the alert outside the door of the large wigwam, his flintlock primed and at the ready; he had tied a sprig of cedar together with a hawk feather near the muzzle of the barrel of his gun. The people of the village and their visitors were gathering around the wigwam and two of the men carried rifles; Brian Burke had his recently purchased Marlin 336 and Albert Loon carried the old Winchester that had been in his clan for as long as he could remember; both rifles were lever-action, both 30-30’s. From inside the wigwam...

Goodbye to my dear friends

It’s been nine years since I began working on what has become The River of Lakes trilogy, and yesterday, on the eve of the second novel being published, I have started working on the last chapter of the third book. And it’s made me rather sad. Over the past nine years I have spent more time with Brian and Maureen Burke, and Joe Loon and Little Stevie Fobister, and This Man and so many others, than I have with anyone outside my immediate—and very understanding—family. I am going to miss them all. They have surprised me, they have delighted me day after day, and I cherish my time with them as they led me on their grand adventures. I didn’t expect...

‘Worlds Between’ gets 5 stars in first review

'Worlds Between', the second novel of The River of Lakes trilogy, will be published on November 6th and Foreword Reviews was the first to review it. They gave it five out of five stars (actually, they gave it five out of five hearts). "At its heart, Worlds Between is an accessible, engaging, and sympathetic tale of families and cultures, and the choices that shape them. It will please fans of historical fiction, family sagas, and stories from around the world." The reception the first novel of the trilogy, 'The 53rd Parallel', received from readers was very gratifying. It's now on sale at the Quiet Man Museum in Cong in the West of Ireland, as well as the Museum of Ojibwe Culture in...

As creative as an Old Irish Goat

The post I wrote a few days ago about my recent trip to the West of Ireland was my most popular—it was read in far more countries than is typical for my blog posts, nearly 20 and counting. I found that the story I included about the discovery of the Old Irish Goat is fascinating everyone, so I thought I would tell you a bit more about them, then show you how my goats, two female Nubians, taught me a valuable lesson we can apply to creative work. The interest in the Old Irish Goat is nicely summarized in a recent article in The Mayo News. “The Old Irish Goats have a long lineage, stretching back beyond...

The 53rd Parallel in Ireland

Ireland, oh Ireland, how I love you so. A lovely land creates a loving people, and it was grand visiting you all again, and making so many new friends. I just returned from a wonderful trip to the West of Ireland, 53 degrees North. My wife and I and our three daughters lived in Galway for a year in the late '90's. We became close friends with Eamon Howley and his family, and I reached out to Eamon when I realized a new character was emerging in the trilogy I'm working, and she was leading me to one of the few corners of the West that was unfamiliar to me. I needed to come for a visit. Eamon...
